UN Official Blames Hezbollah for Civilian Carnage
Al-Jazeera reports that Norwegian Jan Egeland, the United Nations’ Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, after assessing the situation in Lebanon, accused Hezbollah of contributing to the deaths of hundreds of Lebanese civilians. "Consistently, from the Hezbollah heartland, my message was that Hezbollah must stop this cowardly blending . . . among women and children," Egeland told reporters. "I heard they were proud because they lost very few fighters and that it was the civilians bearing the brunt of this. I don't think anyone should be proud of having many more children and women dead than armed men." Egeland also termed Israel’s response “disproportionate” and called for an immediate ceasefire.
